Post Season Depression

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Although it’s only been a short time since rafting season officially ended, that strange, empty feeling has returned.  It’s like, what are we going to do from now until APRIL?!?  Like symptoms of postpartum depression, we, too, experience sadness, fatigue and irritability.  Truth is, we’ll be busy closing things down for the next couple of weeks before we start working on promotions and collateral material for the upcoming season.

We enjoyed great water levels all season, even in August, on the New River.  Gauley Season seems like a blur, it went so quickly.  Bridge Day weekend was amazing, although chilly, and we loved hosting the BASE Jumpers.  As always, it was super to see familiar friends over the past year; and make new acquaintances that learned to love rafting also!

This seasonal depression will pass, as it always does.  It’s nice that WV offers great snow skiing to help pass the time until rafting season begins again in April.  The only good thing about the rafting off-season is the rates – book your next trip in advance and save!

Bridge Day & Beyond

What’s the best way to see the New River Gorge?  On Saturday, October 17, it’s going to be jumping off the New River Gorge Bridge with a parachute.  We’re talking about Bridge Day in West Virginia.  And if you haven’t made plans for the weekend, well, start.  The next best way to see the Gorge is from a raft, of course, with trips still available for this spectacle.

Bridge Day is the biggest festival in the whole state of West Virginia. It’s kind of the big last blast of Gauley Season. And, really, the entire rafting season. This is a big deal.

Just a quick recap: Bridge Day is the one day every year that the New River Gorge Bridge closes to car traffic and opens to people traffic. And then people start jumping off with parachutes.

Bonus- River Expeditions is the host. Not to the jumping; the bridge is the host for that. River Expeditions is host to the party. Yes, that party, the one where all of the people who were earlier jumping off of a bridge go to get a little crazy.  It’s the official ‘after-party’ at the Red Dog River Saloon.  This is your chance to enjoy a great band, meet the jumpers and celebrate another great rafting season.

So let’s do some planning. Get here Friday for the Taste Of Bridge Day, a party where you can go eat yourself stupid on the best food from around the gorge. Saturday is Bridge Day, so book a raft trip with River Expeditions and check out the scene by paddling down the famous rapids of the New River Gorge to the big bridge itself. Then you’ve got the Bridge Day party at River Expeditions.  Sunday is your last chance to raft during the 2009 season, so choose your trip wisely.  Will it be the New or Gauley River?  Decisions, decisions.
