Spring Training

For lots of people who truly love their initial rafting experiences, the lure is strong to accept the challenge and become a guide. Our intensive training program, involves learning to read whitewater, proper guiding techniques, and first aid and cpr training. As a guide, you belong to a team of professionals who share their knowledge and passion for adventure with others. Plus, you can’t beat the view from a river guide’s office! Hjo

The Sun WILL Come Out Tomorrow (really)

So if cabin fever is making you delirious (you know who you are), plan a quick getaway to sunny, southern West Virginia! Of course, the whitewater is the main attraction here and we’re right in the middle of our Spring Fling celebration, but the area is full of other cool things to do also. For example, the trails are in prime shape for ATV tours, mountain biking and horseback riding. You’ll catch a glimpse of the budding flora and get good ‘n’ muddy while you’re at it. If you do decide to fly the coop and raft with us this weekend, don’t forget your sunscreen. And if you can’t make it this weekend, just get here as soon as you can. The water levels are fantastic by the way! Hjo

Down to Earth

So on Wednesday, April 22nd, in observance of Earth Day, we will allocate $10 from each rafter to our ‘Green Up the Grounds’ fund. This dedicated fund goes toward sprucing up our basecamp by planting flowers, shrubs, trees and even for grass seed to fill in areas left bare by guests who don’t always park their vehicles in designated areas (… you know who you are). Bonus Earth Day Offers: Complimentary Paddle Jacket Rental with the Purchase of a Wetsuit ‘Green’ Drink Specials in the Red Dog River Saloon

For the love of Computers!

So last Friday morning we are anxiously awaiting for our first trip to depart. Everything went well with no glitches and then…the server for our reservation system goes down and the backups have been destroyed! Are you kidding me? Something we couldn’t prepare for, something totally unexpected and there is nothing we can do to solve the problem in an efficient, timely matter. Hours go by and still the system is down! We leave that day with intentions of everything having to be re-entered for the year. Once again…are you kidding me? Ummm…drink at the Red Dog anyone? Fortunately, the band Felon was playing in the Red Dog that evening, and one of the members just happens to be this awesome computer technician. He was able to recover the data and put a glimmer of hope in our eyes that only a few days worth of data are missing. Even though (in a way) I hate computers because we’ve come to rely on them so much for everything, and you feel so helpless when something like this happens. Of course, it seems to happen at the most inopportune time. If it weren’t for computers we wouldn’t be having this “conversation” right now would we? You know, “us” keeping in touch with one another is a nice thing! So the moral of this story is, “Don’t sweat the small stuff even though at the time it may seem like some major stuff!” Just take a breath and live life to the fullest because life is too short. Just join me on the river and later in the Red Dog relieving some stress and forgetting about the small stuff! Peace, Love, Whitewater

Welcome Spring

We recently had our first staff meeting of the year. It was good to see everyone again. They’ve been off skiing or doing odd jobs for the past five months. Some stay on here to take reservations, go to the travel shows or work on the property. This winter our RV Park was moved into the campground for your convenience and there were other maintenance issues to be tended to. Of course some of the staff members have full time jobs and just work at River Expeditions on the weekends or their days off. Either way it’s good to have them back and we hope you join us soon too. See you on the river soon! Lively Lani

Real vs. Reality

Rafting lends itself to team work and cooperation in order to maneuver the raft and negotiate the rapids. Being out in nature allows for a true wilderness experience, removed from cell phones, email and the pressures of reality (even if just for a day). The historic significance promotes learning and appreciation of the environment. This year, River Expeditions is pleased to be working with the National Park Service so guests can go deeper in their vacation experience, learning even more about the history, culture and preservation of the park in which they’re enjoying recreational time. Following a day on the river, gather around the campfire or in our comfy lodge for a Ranger-led discussion on an array of topics relating to the New River Gorge National River. So, when it comes right down to it, rafting combines all these elements for a well-rounded vacation experience. I believe passive vacations are passé. So the next time someone tells you to ‘get real’, say okay, let’s go whitewater rafting in West Virginia. Hjo

Go Green!

Always willing for a new adventure, I put on my “Kiss me I’m Irish” T-shirt, my green wig and accessorized with a few green flashing beads from previous years and head out for some celebrating. Since the Red Dog River Saloon doesn’t open until April 4th, my first stop is Charlie’s Pub. Charlie’s is a small pub, but perfect for meeting a few friends or a place where strangers become your new friends. I ran into several coworkers who were out doing some celebrating themselves. Secondly, we stopped by Elliot’s Bar & Grill, located at the Quality Inn Hotel. I recommend trying their chicken wings! Finally, we ended the night at Rezan’s. A few pool tables, Karaoke, green beer, fried pickles and some buffalo chicken dip! Now that’s the way to end a good night! During the season, The Red Dog Saloon does some festive celebrations as well! Look at our calendar of events for special dates. A few of my favorites are College Weekends, Beach Party Weekend and the Halloween Party! Generally, local bands play every weekend. So no need to worry…we have something to do, and there is always a reason to celebrate! Peace, Love & Whitewater

Cabin Fever: Cured!

As for local indoor pursuits, we also like to go to Tamarack - a place to experience West Virginia culture, handcrafts, fine art, regional cuisine and music. March 20, 21 and 27, 28 they’re having a dinner theatre production called SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD. www.tamarckwv.com. There’s also going to be a play at The Historic Fayette Theatre right here in Fayetteville on the same dates. They’re putting on a production called OZ, a dazzling musical adaptation of the timeless "Wizard of Oz" tale. www.historicfayettetheatre.com. With the recent spring weather preview, we’ve been seeing more and more kayaks on top of cars around here and many of our guides have already been boating, as well. The traffic has picked up and the phones are steady ringing with people booking spring rafting trips. Our opening weekend is April 4-5, so in less than a month we’ll be seeing you on the river and we can’t wait. Lively Lani

Steal Your Identity Back!

I think the first step in this process is proper time management. Learning to make time for yourself is very important. I’m not saying to ignore work, family, or bills just add ‘Me’ to the priority list. Next is to reconnect with what (and who) you once believed important. Call up and old friend who shared a common interest (Facebook is a fun way to do this!). Remember what you used to do for entertainment, exercise, and enjoyment and GO DO IT… no excuses. My job is what inspired me. Working at River Expeditions, I see people taking their identity back all around me. It seems like getting away somewhere with friends and family sets the stage for identity recovery. Then when they get on the river their true self emerges – having fun water battling, staring in awe at the scenery around them, laughing at corny jokes, paddling through a Class V rapid, learning about nature and history surrounding them. All these elements – laughing, learning and engaging – are what draw out our true identities. So I hope you’ll resolve with me to steal your identity back, in whatever form that may be. HJO

Pick Your Sick Days Wisely

So here it is Thursday and the high temperature today could possibly reach the low 60°’s. Wait a minute, was it not just two days ago my neighbors saw me in my Strawberry Shortcake flannel pajamas and bright pink snow boots heading out to start my car? Anyhow, I get a call from a few of my friends and they are headed out for a quick raft trip through the gorge (wearing wetsuits, of course). In case you don’t know, the great thing about all of this snow is it melts and turns into extreme whitewater, which makes for an exciting New River journey! Spring on the New is like no other! Unfortunately, missing work on Monday prevented me from hitting the rapids today! Although, I loved taking a day and enjoying the slopes my heart stays true to the whitewater adventure! So the next time you feel like calling in sick…join “us” on the river, because next time I will be there! Peace, Love & Whitewater

Anticipation

As much as we look forward to rafting season, for now, we have to slow down and enjoy what’s left of the winter. When we aren’t in the office with our busy ringing phones we need to enjoy the quiet, beautiful West Virginia mountains. It’s a time to take long walks through the woods looking for rabbit, deer and other animal tracks in the crisp white snow and looking for the birds we hear rustling in the brush. Instead of swimming or hiking in the evenings maybe we’ll have dinner with friends, see a play or gather around the fireplace or woodstove and talk about fun times on the river. So until spring arrives and the new river starts to swell to an exciting level we’ll be anxiously awaiting your arrival and hoping you’re enjoying your winter as much we’re enjoying ours.

On The Road Again

We will be exhibiting in Columbus, Canton, Harrisburg, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Raleigh and Cambridge this winter and spring. We’re always open to attending new shows, so if you know of a great show in your area, let us know about it. While River Expeditions uses a whole host of advertising mediums, we still believe that attending travel shows and meeting people face to face is a great way to develop communication and build a rapport with potential guests. Travel shows also afford us the privilege of staying in touch with past guests who often visit our booth to re-tell stories of their most recent rafting adventure (somehow the tales grow taller with each telling). We have built relationships with these guests who we are proud to call our friends… some for over 20 years. River Expeditions show sales team is made up of river guides, managers, and support staff who welcomes you to the show and will likely greet you upon arrival at our headquarters, if you should visit. Our show sales team is grateful for the opportunity to get out of town, and avoid ‘cabin fever’ which is at its worst just before rafting season gets underway in early April. The reason we call it our sales team is that we actually sell trips at the shows. While many attend to browse or gather information, others take advantage of special show-only discounts and incentives and choose to book at the show. Whatever your reason for attending, be sure to visit our booth and give a shout out! We look forward to seeing you ON THE ROAD AGAIN - Hjo

Local rain has been hard on our construction efforts but great for raising the river level - high water is forecasted throughout the spring! River Expeditions offers many themed and special events weekends in April and May with significant discounts off the regular rates, so make time to join us for some fun on (and off) the river.
